The Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) launched the first study on consumer perception towards sustainable palm oil products in Indonesia on 6 November 2015. The study shows that the Indonesian consumers’ understanding about the impact of palm oil to the environment and communities is still very low. However despite the low level of awareness, 27% of the respondents or equal with 7.9 million Indonesian consumers are ready to support and shift to sustainable palm oil products, if available. They claim they are willing to pay a higher price.

In partnership with Daemeter Consulting, the study was conducted back in May to August 2015 and focused on adult females to represent the decision makers for household purchases from middle to high income in major cities. The qualitative study was conducted through in-home observations, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions in Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, and Pekanbaru. The quantitative study involved 700 female respondents as the main sample for the quantitative study in major cities in Indonesia, namely Medan, Palembang, Jakarta, Bandung and Surabaya.
