2. Job Summary
Daemeter seeks a Senior Manager for its Responsible Sourcing program, based in Indonesia. The position offers a unique opportunity for the right candidate to lead an established team of professionals supporting a diverse, high profile client base as well as to guide future growth of the program. Primary responsibilities of the Senior Manager will be to: (a) oversee the design, resourcing and provision of high quality, cost-effective advisory, technical consulting and project management services to Daemeter’s Responsible Sourcing clients; (b) oversee thoughtful growth of Daemeter’s work to support building sustainable commodity supply chains for new commodities, biomes and geographies, leveraging Daemeter’s unique strengths in established commodities; and (c) manage and expand Daemeter’s existing and future external partnerships to advance sustainable agriculture and forestry through collaborative government, private sector, civil society and local action. The ideal candidate will have: an established track record of leading successful corporate engagements in agricultural and forestry sectors, including meaningful work in Indonesia to support the design and implementation of corporate sustainability commitments; excellent knowledge of established approaches to drive supply chain wide sustainability through legal compliance, certification, NDPE and other market-based approaches; excellent team building and management skills; and desire to take full advantage of the immersive learning opportunities offered by the experience of living and working in Indonesia.
3. Key Responsibilities
The Senior Manager will oversee implementation of: advisory and technical support to Responsible Sourcing clients; lead new business development initiatives in new commodities and/or new geographies; manage and expand Daemeter’s existing and future external partnerships to advance Responsible Sourcing; and support capacity building and professional development for Daemeter team members, particularly those involved in delivery of the Responsible Sourcing program. Main responsibilities include:
Advisory and technical support
o Lead design and implementation pathways for Daemeter clients pursuing NDPE (no deforestation, no peat, no exploitation) policies and commitments. This shall include:
o Design of strategies, methods and tools for NDPE policy development, gap and/or risk assessment, action planning, implementation and progress monitoring;
o Establishment of traceability programs, to mill level (TTM) and supplying upstream producers (TTP), with special focus on Daemeter’s Risk Calibrated Approach (RCA) to TTP, including design of targets, monitoring and reporting protocols;
o Enhancement of supplier engagement strategies and action plans to drive progress
o Designing and managing assessments to design site-level implementation pilots and associated site level action plans;
o Identification of gaps in personnel for clients to implement policies and support strategies for recruitment and training to build required internal capacity
o Actively lead and/or support client engagements, especially in the design of annual work programs, short, medium and long term priorities and proposal and contract development;
o Actively support design and development of innovative and targeted solutions to challenges central to supplier sustainability compliance and responsible sourcing. Actively engage with experts in this process to ensure continuous adherence to good practice
o Actively support development and testing of practical tools for implementation and monitoring of sustainability commitments, including e.g. self-assessment and progress monitoring tools, due diligence check lists, grievance tracker and traceability systems.
o Actively support due diligence processes undertaken by clients for investment and/or commercial relationships (e.g., joint ventures, implementation partnerships, new supplier on-boarding)
o Provide regular reports on progress for Directors, partners, and clients.
o Ensure provision of quality, cost-effective project management services to Daemeter and clients
o Other technical areas aligned to professional experience and expertise
Business Development
Maintain and strengthen existing commercial strengths of Daemeter, by:
o Identifying priority research and consulting opportunities aligned to Daemeter’s mission
o Leading the design, planning and proposal writing to pursue opportunities
o Co-leading a process to identify and prioritize opportunities for expansion of Responsible Sourcing work into new commodities, ecosystems and geographies, leveraging Daemeter’s existing strengths in palm oil, rubber, coconut, bamboo and forestry in Indonesia and Malaysia;
o Based on this, developing and co-leading implementation of a structured plan for pursuing agreed priorities for new program development;
o Working closely with Daemeter’s business management unit to optimize resource allocation and budget utilization throughout project cycle to ensure quality, cost effective service delivery
External partnerships & stakeholder engagement
o Oversee Daemeter’s participation in various industry working groups and collaborative partnerships advancing collective action to drive industry wide transformation
o Actively engage on sustainability issues with different players in palm oil supply chain including producers (growers and mills), buyers, processors and traders, and downstream users
o Develop and maintain good engagements with partnership organizations, including Daemeter’s long term partnership with Proforest under CORE (Consortium of Resource Experts)
o Develop and maintain good engagement and communication with clients, colleagues, peers and partnership organizations, including government agencies where appropriate
o Liaise directly with future prospective project implementation partners, as part of building and maintaining personal and professional relationships
o Represent Daemeter at agreed sustainability events, workshops, conferences or other public venues.
Capacity building & professional development
o Leveraging the Senior Manager’s knowledge, skills and experience, actively support development of enhanced technical training and management capacity building of Daemeter staff, with the specific objective of increasing technical knowledge and transferring knowledge and expertise.
o Mentor team members and assist in formation of career development plans, with the aim of encouraging long term professional capacity building for ascent into leadership positions
o Carry out regular evaluations of Responsible Sourcing staff, with the aim of improving delivery performance and expanding capacity for project leadership
4. Required qualifications
o 5-7 years of experience of in-depth private sector engagement on responsible production and/or responsible sourcing in forestry and agricultural sectors
o 3-5 years of experience working in producer countries, preferably in Southeast Asia, including at least two years of experience in Indonesia
o Established track record of success in supporting the design and implementation of private sector policy commitments on responsible production and/or sourcing, including corporate NDPE programs, especially in the palm oil sector
o Established record of leading teams and overseeing successful, cost effective implementation of complex work programs involving integration of multiple work streams implemented by different parties, often in different geographies and time zones
o Strong analytical and writing skills
o Excellent record of managing teams respectfully and adaptively to bring the best out of team members at different stages in professional development and with diverse ways of working
o Proven ability to build alliances, support formation and participate actively within complex, multi-party partnerships aimed at driving collective action to address shared priorities
o Strong working familiarity with RSPO, ISPO, MSPO, ISCC and related certification schemes a plus
o MSc or higher in natural resource management, environmental policy or related fields
o Working facility in speaking and reading Bahasa Indonesia a distinct plus
