GeoTraceability and Daemeter have today announced a collaboration designed to support the global palm oil industry in achieving supply chain traceability from smallholder farms to mill and refinery.
This collaboration is intended to accelerate the establishment of an industry-wide database of smallholders, in order to promote an equitable palm oil sector by proving deforestation-free status and ensuring that smallholders are not excluded from international supply chains.
Geotraceability (GeoT) is the provider of unique software, specifically designed for mapping farms and providing traceability for the produce of smallholders. So far GeoT has mapped more than 140,000 smallholders in 8 commodities and 11 countries, and has successfully integrated them in traceable global supply chains.
Based in Indonesia and USA, Daemeter is a highly respected international consultancy with decades of collective experience in agriculture, forestry and natural resource management, providing advisory and field services focused on sustainability, social engagement, environmental management and certification.
Pierre Courtemanche, CEO of Geotraceability, said, “This is a win for the palm oil traders who get the traceability they need and a win for smallholders who can demonstrate their fresh fruit bunches were grown legally and are deforestation free, we are pleased to be working with Daemeter to deliver this service due to their long experience in land use management in the region.”
Neil Franklin, Director at Daemeter, said, “Consumers are demanding that all segments of the palm oil sector are responsible; this collaboration will provide a much needed service to promote progress, while supporting the rights and interests of community growers on the sustainability journey.”
