A Collaborative Effort for Sustainable Palm Oil in Sumatra's Riau Province
Now in its 3rd year, the Siak Pelalawan Landscape Programme (SPLP) is a long term private-sector driven collaboration to support regional Government to achieve sustainable palm oil production across a priority forest and peat rich landscape in Riau province, Sumatra. Coordinated by Daemeter and Proforest, as a multistakeholder partnership with civil society organisations, SPLP brings together a coalition of eight global palm oil companies working together to halt and reverse historical forest loss and degradation of forests and peatland, while mitigating risks from fire and unsustainable land practices. Aligned to regional Government development commitments, the SPLP prioritises the inclusion and livelihoods of local people as beneficiaries of sustainable commodity production. The Economic Cooperation and Development division of the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), provides further funding to support the scaling of, and learning from, this landscape approach. Together with a strong local technical team, coalition companies have been working extensively with their suppliers and communities to implement supply chain traceability and to progress towards nature and people positive palm oil production.
